"Gekidan Engimono" series -1st story- "Unlucky Days ~Natsume no Mousou~" (18 April to 12 May, 2004)
Starring: Koyama Keiichiro (NEWS), Sakurai Sho (Arashi), Hirayama Aya (actress)
Highlights: Sakurai and Aya are having some really unlucky days, but then they discover a 1,000 yen note with scribbles all over it that turns their worlds upside down. Koyama plays a pretty lousy assistant to a comic writer. There are also some baddies who try to pull off a bank robbery, some mafia guys with an old lady, some singers who sit like statues and a computer geek bankman. As usual with this series, the shows don't make a lot of sense, but this one at least has a (sort of) story and a moral (?) to it.

We also get to hear Massu's rock songs called "Imagine It" and "Baiser (Kiss)" which have really dumb lyrics (one of them sounds like a complete rip-off of a Beatles song)!

Highlights: I liked this episode more than the first one. I laughed so much when they tried to act cool and pretend they were smokers (even though it was obvious they were all lying!) Shige sniffing the girl's hair for so long cracked me up! And I loved how Kusano kept wanting the girl to wipe him or pinch him (and the way he gave her candy for free!) I still don't get why no one was more concerned when Tegoshi came back covered in grime and blood, but maybe guys just don't notice that sort of thing?! Maybe it's a girl thing to want to know why your friend looks like he's been in a war...!?

Kusano is hilarious trying to explain to the girl about what a certain porn video and book look like! And Massu is kind of sweet at the end when he stares at the girl and says "Girls are beautiful."

Highlights: Tegoshi talks!!! He speaks a whole 3 words!! (We're lucky because it's 3 words when it's translated to English. In Japanese it's only 1 word! So us English speakers got 3 times more dialog from Tegoshi than the Japanese viewers got! LOL)  And this final episode almost has a plot! Okay, so the almost-plot revolves around a dead dumpling, but it's closer to a plot than we got in the first 3 episodes! The boys were funny looking like policemen directing traffic when they were telling the suicide guy where to jump from! Tegoshi freaked me out when he put his hands over his ears and started moaning like he was possessed by some weird ghost or something. Also you'll get to see Kusano as the worst fake crier EVER (only Massu would ever be fooled by it!)

Highlights: This is a very moving (read: tear-jerking!) special one-off drama about people who become foster parents and the kids they take into their family. It is an excellent drama (just ignore the first 10 minutes where they lecture a bit as they try to educate the Japanese public about foster care.) Yamapi plays the teenage foster child role and he is excellent as a delinquent (I guess he was probably going through that phase in real life at the time too!) I really recommend this drama - but make sure you keep a box of tissues handy as I don't think anyone could ever watch it without crying. I want to tell you my highlights, but I don't want to ruin the story too much, so let me just say that I loved Yamapi's letter to his parents near the end of the drama.

Highlights: Ryo plays a guy who gets a brain tumor. His family are absolutely wonderful and love him dearly. [And now for my real opinion: Usually I love tear-jerker mini dramas like this, but the way they jumped through time so much meant that I have to be honest and say I didn't like it very much. I did think the family were all wonderful and it made me think again about how lucky I am to have a family that is so similar to the one in this drama. But the two people who were the ones who kept promoting the drama - Ryo & the nurse chick - were kind of non-events! The nurse chick had the tiniest role ever!! And Ryo is a great actor, but I felt much more of a connection to all the other characters than I did to him. The jumping scenes and lack of information about his disease made me feel like I didn't ever learn much about his character.

I don't know if I'm just a sucker for emotional shows, but this episode had me both laughing and crying. And going "Awww" when Koyama peeked into the dressing room and said "Mama~!" when he saw the mother in her wedding dress. During the live stage part Ya-Ya-yah & 4 NEWS members sing a short medley where Shige doesn't fail but Koyama does as they break through paper doors and then he fails again when he tries to stand up on a block and ends up falling into Shoon's waiting arms! *Aw, how romantic~!*

"Ya-Ya-yah" show (14 March, 2004) Public Bath Battle

Firstly they more or less cut his part of the game, then later he goes into the audience to ask questions, but manages to laugh stupidly *hee hee hee* and then insult one girl (and when he tries to make up for that, he manages to sound even stupider!) The NEWS members (or K.K.Kity as they were known at this time) sing a medley of cool old Johnnys songs. In the talk segment, Kusano tries to say he'll cut a dumpling into 4 parts, but even the audience knows that he's lying! Meanwhile, Koyama gets worked up about the bad side of Japanese peoples' personalities.

NEWS talk about times when they've cried. Shige says that the other members wiped away his tears for him... awwww~! Question? perform a couple of great songs, Yabu gets a sexy song to sing (even though he has the sex appeal of a goldfish!) and A.B.C. have a new song that sounds nice but has a rather forgettable dance (considering they are usually the best dancers in the Jrs.) The show ends with HSJ going for the world record of number of people on stage at one time - as if they didn't already have enough members in their group, they also had a billion Jr backdancers and even the audience up on the stage too!

It seems that he watches Tegoshi's "Sekai no Hate Made ItteQ" show, but not Koyama's "Shounen Club"!!!!

Highlights: I personally found this episode a bit dull. Of course the Koyashige MC rocked! They're so funny together! And I loved Shige's "fresh eyes." The game was where they had to guess what was in the box, but Shige's choices of objects were a bit dull. Tsubasa performed a song, but not as sexily as in the last episode. Yabu sang a ballad that he wrote the lyrics to and some other HSJ kids performed songs too, but the back dancers seemed to give much better performances than the HSJ kids.

Yamapi & Koyama gel nicely doing their little "I think" thing, and NEWS all follow on each other's "Way cool" joke nicely. (And you've got to love that Masuda likes girls who give him snack food!) The game part is Who is Mr. X? and features Ueda getting yelled at by a very angry Mr. X! Jin's reaction when they find out who Mr. X is seems really adorable and genuine too. One last thing, Ueda is a genius! I have no idea how he figured out the quiz question so quickly. Darling Bakanishi couldn't even spell his own name correctly, but was still surprised that Ueda seemed to have a higher IQ than him...! LOL

Highlights: Someone should make Yamapi re-watch this episode & see how handsome he used to be - and hopefully make him want to go back to his old handsome hairstyles instead of perming his hair to smithereens! Kusano seems to enjoy teasing Shige and I think Ryo gets jealous of Kusano in the very final song & decides to act like he's with Tegoshi to try to get back at Yamapi for ignoring him! (I've noticed this a lot lately, but Ryo seems to be really possessive of Pi and not like to share him. Could someone please get Ryo a long-term girlfriend so he doesn't always act so clingy to the few people he's opened his heart to!?) Massu's dancing reminds me of MC Hammer but is fabulous nonetheless (and it's probably the only time I've ever thought of him as being sexy!) The game part is Who is Mr. X. Yamapi's solo songs are always lovely to listen to & I like the lyrics he writes because they're so positive (unless they're in English, in which case they're sex crazy nonsense! Case in point: MOLA...!!)

I also kept in the parts of Yamapi and K.K.Kity singing a few songs too (because I'm the subber & I love them best. So there!) and Yamapi's little "solo comment" summary where he makes his cute fish face.

Kei mentioned how Yamapi & Ryo would sit in the middle of the room while the other members would hide away in a corner, feeling awful about the way Yamapi looked down on them! Actually, it looks like a lot of parts were cut out of this show, so hopefully we'll see some more interesting parts of the interview on a "unaired cuts" show or something sometime in the future.

Highlights: This is by far my favorite SCP ever! Shige is absolutely hilarious...!!! He calls himself "elite" and talks about the "Kato Kingdom" where he ruled over Yabu & Hikaru. But then there were a few moments when I found myself of the verge of tears, like when he talked about how he'd been so depressed about being the unpopular member of NEWS and how he'd burst into tears during rehearsals because he'd been overwhelmed with negative feelings. I found it sweet that he mentioned that it was Ryo who was the one to go and comfort him at those times.

Unfortunately these days no one reveals anything unknown on this show (which is a pity, because I'd been waiting patiently for Ryo to come on so we could hear how he honestly feels about being in 2 groups) so it has just turned into a "let's repeat the same old tales we always tell" show. The only new thing I learned was that having a name that starts with the letter M and being able to roller skate will mean that you can be a Jr even after having debuted!

I thought Pi isn't supposed to like mornings, but he seemed to be on a real high for this clip even though it was barely 6 AM in the morning! Tegoshi is made to do some calligraphy and an expert explains what it tell us about his personality.

Highlights: Yamapi & the other people in the little box at the bottom of the screen are adorable in this clip, especially when you seem them trying to make the shapes of animals with their hands. The way Koyama truly cared for the kids and spent so much time just chatting to them in sign language was beautiful to watch. And the way they all kept looking towards Koyama after the show was over made me realize how much they trust him & how important he had become to them. When Koyama signed the meaning of the song to them as they sat clutching their balloons, my heart just melted. And I'd just like to point out that I know the part about Koyama playing a penguin could be interpreted to mean either he's playing a daddy penguin or a mommy penguin, but for some reason it just didn't feel right to write "daddy." Koya-mama as a mama penguin is just so much more natural! *I think I may have gender issues when it comes to Koyama! Ha ha* I'm glad the girl from the idol group SPEED who has a deaf son was also able to be there to see the beautiful hand shadow show.
