Highlights: The best part has to be teeny-tiny-baby Ryo initially sounding more terrified than tuneful up on his swing during his duet with Subaru. He redeems himself when he sounds pretty good singing an English song (while being dressed like a clown! Lime green suit & white shoes?! Ha ha!!) Then there's the part where Yamapi fangirls (fanboys ??) Koki's naked photo shoot. There's a few lovely Toma & Pi shots during the backstage part (which obviously make Tackey jealous) so Tackey molests Yamapi before his solo song. There's a line in a T&T song that says "And I'm talking nonsense" and that really sums up most of the songs they chose to sing! Most of them don't make much sense at all...!

KinKi are involved in a random flag finding, clue solving orienteering, 3-legged race contest (!?) with Sakurai & Matsuoka. And many Johnnys fail at having good balance during a huge sponge dominoes crossing contest.

Highlights: I think this part is the best of the 3 parts of this year's Sports Day. I like to think of this as being the "B" clip. There's baseball, basketball, beach flags, backstage and the best scenes shown again. I thought it was cute that Yamapi was chosen as the #1 gentleman in Johnnys (and that Tsuyoshi thinks Yamapi has a perky butt!) Then there was HaseJun who was the complete opposite! The white team counting loudly to mess up Okada's attempts at estimating 10 seconds was pretty funny too. Kamenashi really was incredible during the baseball and it ended up being a really exciting match to watch near the end! ~~Can I also give a special mention to the shot of Toma wiggling his butt as he led the crowd in the cheering for the baseball game?~~

The event begins and ends with medleys of JE songs.

Highlights: This is the part where they spend the first 20 minutes interviewing everyone & saying bye, then they do the  physical check up tests to see their strength and flexibilty (or lack of strength and flexibility...!) I found most of it a bit dull. But I did like where Sakurai introduced Arashi's "hope for the future" *lol* Once again Tsuyoshi stole the show with his comments (Desert!) but this time it seemed like he was trying a bit too hard to be the star. And maybe I think too hard, but I liked looking at the results of their lung capacity to try to guess who were smokers and who weren't at this time.

And naturally Johnnys boys are so talented that they master anything they try within minutes! At the end they go to eat and talk about the kinds of girls they like. Yamapi admits that looks count, while Massu is obviously thinking about one particular girl when he talks about there being girls who have charming eyes. ~~I wonder who she was?~~

Note: This is a fancam, so the audio is rather echoey (Is that a word?!) and therefore it was hard to catch the audio 100% accurately.
Highlights: Just ignore the first 2 pointless minutes of soldier boys running around in the dark pretending to be G.I Joe. Despite the seemingly strange mix of these 3 boys, the conversation was very natural and hilarious! Poor Ryo thought they'd never get around to inviting him to join their soccer team, they're going to headhunt Akanishi from Nagase's grasp and Matsujun gets annoyed when Ryo complains that Matsujun never says yes to his invitations. Power-hungry Matsujun tells Ryo to speak politely to him and later Ryo adamantly declares that he loves his member more than Matsujun could ever do! Nakamaru talks about being rejected from Nagase's soccer team because he's a comedian and how he hangs out with Ueda a lot. Matsujun is absolutely shocked at the idea of spending too much time with the other Arashi members.

[Drama] Special dramas

Special drama "Budou no Ki" (Grapevine) (7 Nov, 2003)

Highlights: This is a very moving (read: tear-jerking!) special one-off drama about people who become foster parents and the kids they take into their family. It is an excellent drama (just ignore the first 10 minutes where they lecture a bit as they try to educate the Japanese public about foster care.) Yamapi plays the teenage foster child role and he is excellent as a delinquent (I guess he was probably going through that phase in real life at the time too!) I really recommend this drama - but make sure you keep a box of tissues handy as I don't think anyone could ever watch it without crying. I want to tell you my highlights, but I don't want to ruin the story too much, so let me just say that I loved Yamapi's letter to his parents near the end of the drama.

"24 Hour TV Special drama" (29 Aug, 2009) "Niini no Koto Wasurenaide"

Highlights: Ryo plays a guy who gets a brain tumor. His family are absolutely wonderful and love him dearly. [And now for my real opinion: Usually I love tear-jerker mini dramas like this, but the way they jumped through time so much meant that I have to be honest and say I didn't like it very much. I did think the family were all wonderful and it made me think again about how lucky I am to have a family that is so similar to the one in this drama. But the two people who were the ones who kept promoting the drama - Ryo & the nurse chick - were kind of non-events! The nurse chick had the tiniest role ever!! And Ryo is a great actor, but I felt much more of a connection to all the other characters than I did to him. The jumping scenes and lack of information about his disease made me feel like I didn't ever learn much about his character.

Then all of HSJ come on and we hear how Yamada thinks of Hikaru as his "Master" or teacher. Koyama seems to think that Yamada needs to change that way of thinking ASAP!

Highlights: I thought the "Mugen no Hane" song that he'd written & composed was a bit cliche (although there were a few nice lines of lyrics in it) but it was his other song that seems to now be stuck in my head. There was one line that talks about a girl at a bar looking like she's going for "take-out" that night that I thought was brilliant! It seemed a great way to explain the way someone looks when they're trying to find a one-night-stand. Is it mean for me to add one last highlight being how Tackey seemed to direct all his talk to Koyama & ignore Nakamaru the entire time?! Poor Nakamaru...

How much more could they have pushed for Kawai & Nakajima to win at certain times, but STILL Uchi didn't get it! Nakamaru's tone of voice half-way through becomes so condescending when he's speaking to Uchi, but I don't blame him!

I loved how embarrassed Yabu got about everyone saying how he cries like a baby, hugs Hikaru when he's crying, is scared of frogs, and squeals like a girl when Tegoshi teases him! They ask HS7 what they've most scared of during the Jr ni Q corner and it seems that eggplants, pet dogs and mothers are the scariest things they can think of.

And the way he let Hikaru pet up his hair and say "Good boy" as if he was talking to a puppy was so adorable. Oops, enough of the fangirling and back to the highlights section... The game segment was "What's in the box?" which was as funny as usual. And HSJ were funny with the way they walked out on Hikaru when it was his turn to talk about his fear of cats.

"The Shounen Club" (6 Sept, 2009) Kis-My-Ft2's letter from Singapore & "HAIR"

(See why I love Koyama so much!) It was funny hearing about Senga's super popularity in Korea too! I haven't watched Shounen Club in a long time, so I was kind of shocked by how Kis-My-Ft seem much worse at singing and dancing than I remember! And their songs have stopped being nice & catchy as well. They've changed from the nice NEWS-y boy-next-door pop style to the KAT-TUN-y we-pretend-to-be-rockstars style.

Kei mentioned how Yamapi & Ryo would sit in the middle of the room while the other members would hide away in a corner, feeling awful about the way Yamapi looked down on them! Actually, it looks like a lot of parts were cut out of this show, so hopefully we'll see some more interesting parts of the interview on a "unaired cuts" show or something sometime in the future.

Highlights: This is by far my favorite SCP ever! Shige is absolutely hilarious...!!! He calls himself "elite" and talks about the "Kato Kingdom" where he ruled over Yabu & Hikaru. But then there were a few moments when I found myself of the verge of tears, like when he talked about how he'd been so depressed about being the unpopular member of NEWS and how he'd burst into tears during rehearsals because he'd been overwhelmed with negative feelings. I found it sweet that he mentioned that it was Ryo who was the one to go and comfort him at those times.

The only new thing I learned was that having a name that starts with the letter M and being able to roller skate will mean that you can be a Jr even after having debuted!

Highlights: "STAND UP!!" shocked me when I first saw it because I was like, "They have a porn drama on prime time TV in Japan!?" I loved the way it said that Yamapi seemed to have had the adult experience and techniques to know all about sex. I also loved the way Yamapi stammered over his words when he found out that he was going to be using a naked girl as a train track *squeal* And Oguri Shun yelling "GOAL~!!!" as he bends down to kiss a girl was so funny! Although this seemed like a porn clip, they pretended it was educational by telling us such gems as "If you ride, wear a helmet."

He seemed a bit full of himself during the "one year later" part and seemed to act like he thought he was such a good actor that he'd continue to be bombarded with movie & drama offers.

It kind of felt like a lecture about the characters that will appear more than a "get you excited to watch this series" promotional show. They keep going on and on about how speedy the drama is, but it seemed like this show was really speedy but the first episode of the actual drama itself wasn't any different than most other dramas really. And they tried to show off a lot about how this drama is based on American shows, interviewing a foreign guy from Warner Brothers and emphasizing that it was an American who drew the animation for the promo ad.

Highlights: NEWS > KJ8 eg. Uchi had to choose between NEWS & KJ8 and he chose NEWS. Ryo says KJ8 are idiots and that he is superior to them. The hosts agree that KJ8 are idiots and that NEWS (particularly Yamapi) are much more grown-up than their older Osakan counterparts. NEWS stop talking (not that they were talking much to begin with!!) when KJ8 come out and they seem to back off a lot. Yoko & Hina beg to be allowed to join NEWS (or at least eat their food~!)

Ryo doesn't seem at all surprised that Pi must have had practice thrusting his hips all of the previous day (... is it okay if I imagine that practice involving Ryo + a bed...?! I mean, you do get to see Ryo sitting in Pi's lap in this clip, so surely I'm allowed to imagine this scene too!) Oh, and Pi was in a JAWS movie!! And Ryo had a strange fanboy when he was 14... someone who looked a lot, LOT older than him!
